This week, students decorated their writing/reading journals and will dive into both reading and writing workshop next week. We will soon wrap up reading My Father’s Dragon, and your child is creating an illustrated summary book about this fun classic. One thing I LOVE about this class is that whenever kids finish up a task, so many are grabbing a book and settling into reading until the next activity…we are readers!
Our district goal continues to be to build empathy and to be kinder than necessary. This hit idea home as we read the book, The Golden Rule, that described the ways this “rule” is a part of so many cultures and religions around the world. During recess, I challenged the kids to practice the Golden Rule and report back. If you are around school next week, check out the many sweet things the kids were able to do during their 10-minute recess. They are on Post-its on our door.
In math, your child took a beginning of the year assessment that will help guide my teaching this early fall. We reviewed measuring using inches and centimeters, learned about rounding, and practiced telling time. Although we are surrounded by digital clocks, I encourage you to help your child use an analog clock when possible; there are many math concepts tucked inside telling time; multiples of 5’s, fractions, strategies to calculate elapsed time, etc.
Our new class pets arrived this week, and your child practiced taking notes from an informational video about our new friends, 100 Indian stick insects. Be sure to ask your child to tell you some facts they learned about these fascinating tiny creatures.
This week, your child checked out books in the library, started a fun name project in art using tape in art class, and worked on rhythm and patterns in music. Your child is learning cursive, explored geography & mapping terms (longitude, latitude, 7 continents, compass rose and the cardinal directions) and created a digital reading sample to show you soon. We’ve been working on a couple fun writing/art projects that you will get to see at Back to School Night on Sept. 13th!
* Please send in a “fun” pocket folder to help keep work organized in your child’s desk.
* Our room gets warm…please send in a water bottle and encourage your child to dress in cool layers.
* Kids should head home after school. Playing and hanging out on campus is not allowed after 3pm. Thanks!
That’s all for now, have a fantastic and restful long weekend!
